A Young Gentleman Requires Therapy For His Acute Depression, Relationship Issues, And For His Alcoholism And Drug Addiction

Approximately eight months ago I had dinner with a thirty-seven-year-old man named Benjamin who suffers from acute depression, has relationship difficulties, and who is alcohol and drug dependent. As articulated by Benjamin, it is his drug addiction and alcoholism and his extreme depression that has had the most to do with his continual relationship problems.

As articulated by Benjamin, he is so defeated by his relationship difficulties and by both of his medical issues that he basically has no desire to accomplish much of anything. What is particularly unfortunate about this is that earlier in his life, Benjamin finished three semesters of grad school in criminal justice.

Benjamin's circumstance makes me wonder if he is an example of an individual who can look in the mirror and see his drug addiction and drinking problems and do something healthy about these problems. Or, conversely, if he is an individual who has to hit the bottom of the barrel before he gets drug and alcohol treatment that results in long-term sobriety.

It may be asked how rehabilitation would help his alcohol and drug addiction. For starters, there are more than a few recently created doctor-prescribed meds that can help Benjamin through the drug and alcohol detox process, through his withdrawal symptoms, and help him avoid a drug or an alcohol relapse. Second, in rehab he could also learn more about his alcoholism symptoms and also about the various stages of alcoholism.

Third, Benjamin would learn to acknowledge the fact that there is absolutely nothing affirmative about drug addiction and excessive and abusive drinking. In a similar manner, he would also learn that messing around with one or both of these unhealthy conditions is the road to poor work and school performance, legal problems, shattered relationships, deteriorating health, financial difficulties, and a premature death. Fourth, counseling for his depression and for his relationship problems might help him manage these mental health problems more effectively and perhaps create less of a need for him to engage in additive behavior. And finally,in rehabilitation he could also learn more about the diverse symptoms of alcoholism that he has displayed.

Since Benjamin lacks the fortitude to achieve much of anything in his life, it is evident that he desperately needs a little hope for a healthier existence. And the sad thing is that hope is all around Benjamin if he could only get to the point in life to get the therapy he requires for his severe depression and dependency and remain in his treatment protocol.

Benjamin is clearly too young to be beaten in life. He doesn't understand this right now but if he can learn how to abstain from drugs and alcohol via drug and alcohol rehabilitation and get the treatment he requires for his extreme depression, he can turn his life around and start living with self-respect, passion, and direction.

Stronger relationships, a wonderful life, self respect, and beneficial change are certainly a reality for Benjamin. But only if he can get inspired to get the medical treatment he requires, follow through with his therapy regimen, live his life in a healthy and sober manner, and learn how to foster a more positive attitude about his life.
