Common Symptoms Of Gastritis Mostly Appear In Older Age

The dictionary describes gastritis as 'the acute or chronic inflammation of the stomach mucosa'. The inflammation is usually diffused in nature, therefore most of the times it is asymptomatic in a mild chronic gastritis. However in an acute condition the symptoms of gastritis are quite prominent.

There are several agents that initiate gastritis but primary etiological factor is the disruption of the gastric mucosal block. 'Helicobacter pylori' is the main causative agent of gastritis. But it is not the only cause, other minor factors are - excessive alcohol intake, NSAIDs (non-steroidal anti inflammatory drugs), portal hypertension, autoimmune disorders, duodenal reflux, gastric schema etc.

This pathological situation is usually diagnosed by gastric biopsy and also recognized visually while doing endoscopy. As mentioned most of the times there are no gastritis symptoms initially and the patient may come to the doctor, in really an advanced case. This is more likely in elderly patients.
