The Alcohol Related Problems And Alcohol Related Deaths That Are Correlated With Excessive And Heavy Drinking And What Can Be Done About Alcohol Addiction And Alcohol Abuse In The United States
How many children are born each year with fetal alcohol syndrome? How many people's lives are cut short due to excessive and abusive drinking? How many people get injured or lose their lives in alcohol related traffic accidents every year? How many individuals lose their lives every year because of drinking problems? How many junior high, high school, and college students lose their lives every year due to an alcohol overdose? How many people are the victims of alcohol related crime or violence each and every year? How many people face serious consequences in their lives because they received a DUI conviction? How many people die each year from a condition that is totally preventable, such as alcohol poisoning? On an annual basis, how many alcoholics fail to get the professional alcohol treatment they need?
So what is the point in asking these questions? Essentially to underline the devastating and destructive nature of excessive and hazardous drinking. Indeed, and based on the above questions, it is a wonder why anyone would choose to drink in an abusive and excessive manner.
Stated more forcefully, with the host of legal proceedings, financial issues, employment difficulties, relationship dilemmas, and health problems that are interrelated with alcohol dependency and chronic alcohol abuse, why would any person with any sense at all want to drink in an irresponsible and abusive manner? If truth be told when some of the above topics are looked at more closely, abusive and hazardous drinking makes even less sense and becomes more illogical.
Wouldn't you think that heavy drinkers would be able to see some of the alcoholism symptoms that they manifest? In a similar way, doesn't it seem plausible to think that many more chronic alcohol abusers would be able to see some of the alcoholism signs that they exhibit? In addition, wouldn't you think that individuals who are addicted to alcohol would try to learn more about their alcoholic symptoms by reading about some basic alcohol related information, facts and statistics?
After reviewing the alcoholism and alcohol abuse research findings, the point is so relevant that it needs to be restated: With all of the damaging and debilitating consequences that are even remotely correlated with repetitive and continuous alcohol abuse and alcoholism, why would any individual want to involve himself or herself in hazardous drinking?
What can be done about the widespread nature of alcohol addiction and alcohol abuse in our country? Firstly, society needs to get the message to more individuals about the unhealthy and debilitating consequences of excessive and abusive drinking. Secondly, people who are alcohol abusers or alcohol dependent need to look look at themselves honestly and ask why they are not getting the professional alcohol therapy they require.
Third, our students need more relevant and more meaningful preventative and educational approaches and methods so that more students at all grade levels, including those at college, are "reached". And fourth, our students need to learn how to become problem solvers in life rather than getting easily drawn to the "instant gratification" and the "quick fix" of an alcohol or drug abuse "high" or "buzz".
There's room for optimism and hope if people can start drinking responsibly and those who engage in abusive drinking can become motivated to get the alcohol treatment they require. Indeed, why put your loved ones through turmoil, pain, and suffering because of your abusive and unhealthy drinking when you have the power to control your life by drinking responsibly or even stopping drinking if you cannot control your drinking behavior?
